Reboot Your Summer Wardrobe with these 5 Key Pieces

It's not easy getting dressed in the summer, is it?  The idea of putting together an outfit, accessorising and choosing shoes seems like just too. much. hard. work.

I talked last week about the five reasons that you couldn't find anything to wear in your closet and how to get on top of the problem in under an hour.

It all starts with having a wardrobe where you can actually see what you've got.  If, after that, you don't have these five key pieces in your summer capsule then that's why you're struggling.

These five items will not only keep you stylish in the heat, but will translate through to the cooler months with a little creativity, too.

The Black Midi Dress
This style of dress is the ultimate in stylish/comfort dressing.  It's long enough to wear for work, yet short enough for those "vertically challenged" girls who feel overwhelmed by a maxi.

Choose one that's loose through the waist with narrow straps to stay cool.

As the weather cools down, just layer a blazer over the top, add ankle boots or skate shoes and you're set for Autumn.

The Loose Culotte
The big sister of the midi skirt and I'm totally in love with this look.  I'm not talking about tailored culottes that can have a formal, almost military feel about them.  I'm talking loose, flowy fabrics that will keep you cool.  The advantage of culottes over a skirt are many but I love them for the fact that your thighs (if they like to say hello to each other whilst you're walking, like mine) don't touch and that saves you getting that delightful sweaty feeling in your nether regions.  Is that enough information?  Shall I shut up now?

These will work great in the Autumn with a little leather jacket and a simple tee, or a fitted jacket for work.

The Sleeveless Shirt
I'm a big fan of the shirt and it's versatility is everything.  It can be a work staple, a beach cover up, a belt to add interest to an outfit, or a classic with jeans.

The summer version, which has no sleeves is just as versatile and I love this version from Bohemian Traders with it's interesting hemline.  Pair it with shorts or culottes or knot it over your Black Midi Dress.

In the cooler months, a top layer will hide the fact that it's sleeveless (in fact, I like to wear sleeveless shirts under jackets as it reduces the bulk and that's always a good thing).

The Fedora
Well, obviously every woman and her dog has one of these now, but if you're like me, with a big head and a lot of hair, finding the right hat is a little tricky.

The natural place to start is in menswear shops and the nice thing about that is that you won't see all your girlfriends wearing the same one either.

Choose a darker shade, like a navy or black and you can easily pair this with your Autumn wardrobe too.
THE STRAW DINGO, HUNTERS AND GATHERERS, $119.95^

The Statement Earrings
I'm sorry, necklaces, you just don't figure too highly in my summer wardrobe.  It may well be just me but I dislike having things around my neck in the heat.  The same goes with bangles.  My accessories wardrobe gets reduced down to earrings when the mercury rises.

But I'm fine with that, I'll keep the rest of my jewellery for evenings out and when it cools down.

I'm going to be grabbing a pair of these statement earrings from Jet Empire's latest collection.  They're a little bit goth, and a little bit boho all grown up, which is a bit like me.
