How to Wear Sheer and Not Feel Exposed

The warmer weather provides plenty of challenges when it comes to getting dressed, particularly if you've got a night out planned.

We recently went out for dinner with the kiddies and started the evening of with a couple of drinks at The Breakwater, which, if you're not from Perth, is a waterside bar and restaurant with a great mix of clientele.  There were families (like us), older couples and lots of folk in their 20's, all dressed to keep the heat at bay.

Lots of the younger ladies were wearing short shorts with cropped tops, which obviously is a great way to keep cool, but perhaps not the ideal look for everyone. It would certainly be outside of my comfort zone!

A great way to look stylish and not expose acres of flesh is to choose something sheer.  I've rounded up a fabulous selection of sheer items, with some useful tips on how to wear them.

I don't always like to look too "girly" and this can easily happen when wearing sheer as it's quite a feminine look.  To prevent this, I like to choose an edgy silhouette, for example this Whistle blouse from WITE.  I love the dropped hem and would wear this with shorts and wedges for a night out.

Loose, blowy layers are a great way to stay cool, and making the layers sheer is a much more stylish option.

This navy sheer dress is lined and would look amazing with gladiator sandals. I'd roll the sleeves and wear the neckline open with some layered long chains.

Likewise this Liberty print sheer dress from Surafina is loose enough to stay cool and I love the hemline.

I love lace, but the idea of wearing anything fitted when it's hot makes me feel all claustrophobic.

I adore these two lace tops and they would be super versatile.  You could wear either with shorts, a midi skirt or culottes.

I have a longline olive green sheer shirt that I bought from Target early in the year, and I wear it so much.

This one from Boohoo is a perfect shape and would look great over ankle-grazer jeans.

Well, that really depends on you.  The options are below, and you probably have them all in your closet already.

  • for a sexier look, just wear your bra - make sure it's black under black, and white under white, though
  • a camisole in the same colour OR for a stark contrast, wear a black cami under a white sheer top
  • a sports bra.  I know that sounds a little odd, but check out the image from Boohoo below - how great does that look?  A bit more coverage than a regular bra, but less than a cami.  Genius!

I hope I've given you some ideas on how to style your sheer pieces to stay cool this summer.  Do you have much sheer in your closet?

Oh, and did you read my post about how to pack for a holiday in just a carry on?  Check it out here.

  1. I've never been comfortable with sheer (often it looks trashy) but I should give it a try as most of these looks are beautiful. Thanks for opening my eyes to the possibilities!

I love getting comments!
