Why I Won't Give Up My Eyeliner

The Fashionable mum Style Signature

There are certain things in life that just work.  Coffee with steamed milk.  Cheese and wine.  Socks and sandals (kidding).  One of those things for me is black eyeliner.

Without eyeliner, I feel completely undone.  To call it feeling naked is to stretch the truth too much, but without that simple black line, I simply do not feel like me.

I've worn black eyeliner, usually with a cat's eye flick for so many years I can't count them.  I started my early dabblings with make-up at around thirteen and quickly decided that the Goth look was the one I was to go for. Perfecting the Siousxie Sioux eyeliner has stood me in good stead for creating a quick and accurate cat's eye for the last thirty (dear god) years.  I wish I had some photographic evidence of this period of my history, but for some reason, nobody felt like taking photos of a thirteen year old punk-wannabe - wonder why?

I'm partial to a pencil, I love a liquid, but a gel liner is now my weapon of choice.  I've tried and discarded so many that my make up drawers are like an eyeliner graveyard.

But this post isn't about my eyeliner, or even a tutorial on how I do it.

I want to ask you a question.

What's your Style Signature?  What is the one thing (or two, or like me, three) that makes you feel like you.  It could be high heels, or skinny jeans, or even the colour of your lipstick. We all have something that we reach towards, almost automatically, that makes us feel "finished" or polished.  For me, it's my eyeliner and a couple of other things which I'll discuss in the next post.

I'm not talking about hanging onto your youth, though some may disagree with wearing black eyeliner over the age of forty, when the skin around the eyes isn't as fabulous as it used to be. It's not about wearing things that you've always worn, either, just because they're comfortable and as worn as an old pair of slippers.

I'm talking about that part of your style that people associate with you.

For some ladies, recognising your Style Signature isn't an easy process.  Some women change their look like they change their handbag - boho one day, 1950's glam the next.  I think it's perfectly do-able to have all of these different looks in your arsenal without losing your Style Signature.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to be exploring ways to identify your Style Signature and if you're not sure you have one, then I'm going to teach you how to find the right one for you.

This is the first in a series of posts about discovering your Style Signature.  I'd love you to comment below and let me know what you wear that makes you feel like the best version of you.

  1. Vicki, I love this!! I think my signature style is clean lines. I wouldn't say I am minimalist but I'm not into fussy ruffles and flounces. I don't feel done without some make up on and since letting my hair be its natural, crazy wavy self I think this has become my signature. I love eyeliner at any age. I'm into the texta type pen but also quite partial to my Napolean gel when I need the big guns. Bron x

  2. My heels turn any outfit from zero to hero for me. I just adore the leg lengthening they offer my thunder thighs and the confidence that gives me...just like you with your fabulous eyeliner - I totally refuse to give them up anytime soon! xx

  3. My style signature is colour. I used to be a blah understated dresser until I stopped playing along with the latest trend and began to wear what worked for me and a touch of red lippy.

I love your eyeliner too. Zoe xx

  4. Oh I love your eyeliner! My style signature? It used to be leopard print. And it still is in small doses, but now I think wearing black is my thang. x
