How to wear a leather skirt

Are you toying with the idea of a leather skirt this year?

I have a little crush on leather skirts at the moment.  It could be to do with the slightly cooler weather, but the idea of a leather skirt  is very appealing.  I have one that I bought from the Salvo a year or so ago.  It was too small when I got it and I mistakenly thought the incentive of wearing it would be enough to make me stop eating cheese and drinking wine.  Er, no, it wasn't.

So I'm in the market for one that actually fits me, and I'm open to pleather.  Or vegan leather as those hipsters would call it.  To me it will always be pleather.

I've done some hunting around and it looks like I'm not the only one that fancies a leather skirt this season.  The shops are over flowing with them - some in deliciously dark shades of forest green and damson which make a welcome change from black.

I'm pretty sure some of you are going to be thinking irk!  How the heck do I wear one of those as a 40-something mum whose most exciting night out this week is a Tupperware party.  You can totally wear this during the day - I've styled it a couple of ways below, using items you've probably already got in your closet.

Skirt, The Iconic, $69.95 | Striped Jumper, Target $49.95 | Low heel boots, MissGuided, $60

This first look is so simple - pair a slouchy, square hem jumper (oversized, not skinny) with some shoe boots or low heel ankle boots.  Knee high boots should probably be swerved to avoid the "sexy Gestapo look".

Skirt, The Iconic, $69.95 | Sweatshirt, Boohoo, $20 | Gemma Skater Shoes, Boohoo, $36

This second look is just as easy to wear.  Throw on a comfy marl sweatshirt and flat sneakers and you're ready for the school run/shopping/errands/coffee, whatever!  I think the fact that Perth is never super cold means that bare legs are not an issue for the majority of the time.

Other simple styling ways for day time would be -

  • a breton striped tee, blazer and ballet pumps
  • a denim shirt and Nikes
  • a slogan tee and ankle boots

For evening, it's almost too simple - add a silk shirt, or fine gauge knit sweater, pointy toe pumps and a clutch and you're done!

Do you think a leather look skirt is going to be on your autumn essentials list this year?

  1. Love this look, especially look one but until I can do something about the swelling in my ankles/legs, I've been thinking about giving skirts a big miss but I do really miss them.

    1. I can understand that - luckily I'm featuring some rather fab bloggers in black pants soon, so that might inspire you.

  3. I never thought I'd go for a leather/pleather skirt; it always conjured up images of old hags hanging around biker bars but I found a pleather Sportsgirl pencil number in an op shop and I love it! It gives the elegance of a pencil skirt with a bit of street edge and when pared back with conservative knit top, tights and boots is perfect office wear.

  4. Yes! I'm thinking a p/leather panel ponti skirt for me. Winter here is freezing so warm leggings and knee highboots are almost essential with skirts, so I was hoping the panel ponti option would cut down on the Gestapo look :)

    1. Yes, avoiding the Gestapo look is crucial, I think. I like the idea of it being ponte at the back, particularly if you're wearing it to work, it would make it much more comfy too. Let me know if you find one you like.

    2. I have found 2! But can only afford one. Eder & Berk have a gorgeous leather ponti panel skirt, and Love Your Wardrobe have a PU panel skirt.

  5. I've been looking in op shops for one FOREVER and then I found the perfect vegan leather ponte skirt at Harlow. One last year, and one this year. Sorted!

  7. Did you look in my house- I just bought a leather skirt and going to a Tupperware party tonight! I don't like how the leather clings to my stomach so will be trying the oversized sweater and ankle boots look.

  8. The green CR one is divine BUT quite long (mid calf length)...still not sure I could pull this off with my generous butt and thighs! xx
