Fashionomics Friday Featured Fashionista - Hannah from In The Dress Up Box

There are some people who take thrifting and turn it into an art form.  They wear op shop items with such style that you would never believe that their outfit cost them less than twenty bucks.  Hannah McCall is one of those people.

Her blog, In The Dress Up Box is the ultimate style inspiration for those who love vintage glamour or simply want to look good and spend less.  Hannah could be the pin-up girl for Fashionomics!  If you haven't visited her blog yet, go and check it out, if only to marvel at her mega-watt smile and her dazzling photos, it never fails to make me smile, too.

What is your favourite online place to hunt for fashion bargains?

I do love Asos, Urban Outfitters and Nasty Gal, but my number one online shopping destination is always eBay. I love to trawl through looking for designer bargains; you never know what you might stumble across. I recently scored a brand new pair of Miu Miu pumps for $60! You can also save searches to your account, so if you are on the hunt for a particular item eBay will send you a little notification when someone lists that item for sale. It’s very handy (and deadly!).

What has been your best buy so far this year and how often do you wear it?

Oh my god this is an impossible question! The first thing that springs to mind is my leather biker jacket, which I bought from Wittner (yes the shoe store!) on sale for $125, it’s the softest thing I’ve ever felt and I wore it almost every day throughout winter. Investing in a good quality leather jacket is something I put off for years, but I’m so glad I finally made the leap as it’s a piece I’m going to wear and love for years.
To thrift or not to thrift?

What a ridiculous question! Of course you should thrift! I’d say 90% of my wardrobe is made up of op shopped items. It’s my favourite hobby and I have so many wonderful vintage, designer and high street pieces I’ve thrifted. My absolute favourite reason for thrifting is not the super bargains (although that’s pretty great) but it’s being able to buy something that you know no one else is going to own. I never want to look like anyone else, and shopping at Salvos, Vinnies and Good Sammies ensures I never will.

Save or Splurge – what item do you think it’s worth spending more money on and why?

Sunglasses always! I have a slight problem with buying designer sunglasses, but I always feel that they are a good investment. You will wear a pair of sunglasses in much higher rotation then almost anything else in your wardrobe. So buying one or two good quality and stylish pairs is not only important for healthy eyes, but their cost per wear is actually very affordable.

If you could give us one piece of Fashionomics advice to look great without spending the childrens’ inheritance, what would it be?

Thrift Thrift Thrift! You can put together a super affordable, stylish and good quality wardrobe completely from op shops. Just have some patience and give yourself time to have a good rummage because I promise you’ll find some gems. Op shops are an excellent way to shop for trends as well, you don’t want to spend a huge sum of money on something that will only be in style for a few months, so searching for those trend-specific items at op shops is a great way to try out a new style and not break the bank.

  1. Thanks for hosting Vicki. I can't say I have ever bought from a thrift store but I am a bargain hunter and very rarely pay full price. I do donate all my pre-loved clothes to charity though in the hopes that someone else will fall in love and grab a bargain :)
