Perth Life - a review of PottedPotter at the Heath Ledger Theatre

The first Harry Potter book came out when I was 25 years old and I devoured like a slightly overweight child might devour a cake.  I was hooked from the first page, and like the majority of the world, waiting with barely contained excitement for each book that followed.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to be invited to the opening night of Potted Potter at the Heath Ledger Theatre.  It's 70 minutes long and manages to condense all of the seven Harry Potter books into a crazy, laugh-a-minute spectacle.

I told my husband that I was going to be going to this and he misunderstood completely and thought I said I was going to watch "Puppetry of the Penis" which is an entirely different kind of stage show and one that I wouldn't be taking our ten year old son to see.  Yep, my mystery date was our son, Ruben.

Potted Potter has become an unmitigated success and the Australian tour follows stints in Singapore, Dubai, Manila and Hong Kong.  The entire show is performed by just two actors - James Percy and Benjamin Stratton, following the traditional straight man/funny man roles.

Being a mum of three and embroiled in the world of after school events, lunch boxes and sibling rivalry, my life is not full of belly laughs. However, last night, for almost the full 70 minutes, I laughed until my face ached and my waterproof mascara was tested to the limit.

The set is cheaper than you can possibly imagine.  The props are all from Red Dot but the comedy timing is fautless.  Benjamin's misunderstanding of every single part of the Harry Potter saga is played upon throughout with various geeky references to The Hobbit and Twilight.

There was plenty of ad-libbing, audience participation and quaffle-bashing (not as scary as it sounds!).

I'd wholeheartedly recommend this as a great family night out - kids aged 8 or over will certainly get almost all of the jokes.  Those that are younger will get swept along with the silliness of it all.  In fact, take your grandparents too - I had a trio of elderly gentlemen sat next to me and their shoulders shook throughout.

One condition of me taking Ruben was that he'd write a little review for the blog so here it is.

"I was really looking forward to seeing Potted Potter but didn't know what to expect.  The actors were really funny and I was on the edge of my seat all the time.  My favourite part was probably Book Four - the one with the maze and the dragon.  Benjamin had promised us a great big fiery dragon with googley eyes.  I won't tell you what it really looked like!

My favourite character was Voldermort who wasn't scary at all but made me laugh a lot.

I would like to go and watch it again and take some of my friends with me, I think they'd like it too."

The show runs at the Heath Ledger Theatre, Perth until October 19th, with matinee shows for younger Harry fans - you can get tickets right here.

Has anything made you laugh out loud recently?

  1. My family saw it last year in was awesome and we all loved it :)

  2. My girls are all in to Harry Potter and would love to see this. I've been rather slack and forgot it was coming up. Probably a good thing considering how much I have on at the moment. I didn't realise you were branching out from Style and Fashion or I would have sent some review 'gigs' your way. :)

    1. Thanks Raych - I'm just interested in doing those ones that are family friendly so focussing on the Mum bit of my blog name as well as the Fashionable bit!

I love getting comments!
