Ask the Fashionable Mum - what handbag should I buy next season?

Backpack, backpack!!  For those who have children, that phrase strikes terror into our hearts!  Oh no!  Not more Dora! (I apologise for the profusion of dramatic punctuation, but that's how Dora speaks - she shouts EVERYTHING!!)

For once, I'm going to attempt to say the B-word without saying it twice and without waiting for a talking map to pop out.

We're talking cool, yes cool, backpacks.  No longer just for school kids, this practical carry-all is going to be big news this year.  (I'm calling it early, as not many Aussie shops are stocking them yet, but the UK have LOADS to choose from).

I mentioned last week, that I am now the lucky owner of a beautiful tan leather article, bought for my birthday.  I've used it non-stop, and I'm very pleased with how easy it is to carry (no double strapping for me though, I can't stop myself from slinging it over one shoulder) and the fact it's just a bit different. I was asked to do a round up of the latest backpacks, as a friend of mine was struggling to find any in the stores.

If you want to get on the backpack bandwagon, you have to go through the fruity forest, over the tickly bridge.....oh no, sorry that's not right.  I mean you have to check out the lush selection below and see which one fits your backpack bill.  The Aussie high street hasn't quite caught onto the trend yet, but there are plenty of online options to drool over.

Pastel Perfection (clockwise) Debenhams $60 ||  ASOS $141 || ASOS $78.40 || Witchery $109

Totally Tan (clockwise) David Jones $89.95  || ASOS $147 || Debenhams $90  || ASOS $147

Leopard Lovelies (clockwise)  ASOS $64.68 || The Iconic $99.95 || Sportsgirl $19.99 || ASOS $24.50

Black is Back (clockwise)  Debenhams $90 || Marks & Spencer $150 || Debenhams $180 || Mimco $199

Will you be trying out this trend for Autumn/Winter?

  1. I must admit I'm not a backpack fan but you've got quite the selection here to change my mind! I'm loving the Mimco one. x

  2. A backpack style handbag can be so handy - though like you I just sling it over one shoulder, otherwise it's too hard to get on and off when you want to pay for something or get something out! I think my fave is the Mimco black one too :-)

  3. I am more of a messenger bag/tote girl when it comes to bags but I do love that Mimco black number! Great round up.

  4. I've got a gorgeous Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q leather backpack in Dirty Martini, plus I was lucky enough to win a gorgeous Sunny Jim Copacabana backpack on Down that Little Lane. So I'm set for backpacks and I luff them! I like the Debenhams one just above the Mimco one - but I like that one too!

  8. Oh what a glorious selection! I love backpacks so thanks for the inspiration. I think I'd go for one of those pastel perfection bags that would go with almost anything and still look classy. I've got an old leather back pack that my hubby bought me in Hong Kong in 1996 that I still use lots and it just gets more distressed and gorgeous as it ages. Thanks for commenting over at Lifestyle Fifty by the way :) and I'll be back to check out more here soon too.

  9. Having a stylish backpack is great when you are our with the kids in tow as well. Much easier on the shoulders I find. Love the tan one from David Jones.

  10. I like the snakeskin drawstring one - is that Witchery? The do seem more practical and mum friendly without being daggy.

  11. Now see...if I wasn't such a practical person, I'd go for the ones you've shared in the "Pastel Perfection" range. But, because I KNOW mine will get dirty easily I'll go for the Totally Tan ones! LOVE the one from Debenhams!
